Hamilton Lane Expands Into Brazil
8 September 2011
(Hamilton Lane) Sept. 8, 2011 – Hamilton Lane, an independent financial institution that provides discretionary and non-discretionary private equity asset management services to sophisticated investors, today announced that it is planning to open an office in Rio de Janeiro in order to act as asset manager in Brazil and has hired Ricardo Fernandez Silva, Jr. and Filipe Caldas as Vice Presidents to expand Hamilton Lane’s presence into Brazil.
Messrs. Fernandez and Caldas join Hamilton Lane from Capital Dynamics, where they served as Vice Presidents in the Investment Management and Business Development groups, respectively, and bring nearly 20 years of combined experience in private equity. In their new positions, they will deliver local expertise to Hamilton Lane’s clients, which include institutions and investors based in Brazil, throughout Latin America and across the globe.
“Brazil is a key part of the global private equity landscape,” said Mario Giannini, Chief Executive Officer of Hamilton Lane. “Hamilton Lane has been investing in Brazil for some time. As the country’s private equity environment continues to grow – in investment opportunities, liquidity events and the amount of capital ready to deploy – it’s important for Hamilton Lane to have a local presence in Brazil, better enabling us to deliver customized solutions for our clients.”
Commenting on the region, Mr. Caldas said: “With a rapidly expanding middle class, continued regulatory improvements and high-quality companies with experienced management teams, Brazil offers long-term opportunities for private equity investment. We look forward to partnering with Hamilton Lane’s clients and providing the local knowledge and experience required in today’s global financial world.”
Prior to joining Capital Dynamics, Mr. Fernandez was head of illiquid investments at a multi-family office in Brazil. He previously worked at Santander Private Equity and also held positions at Odebrecht, a large infrastructure developer, in Brazil, Peru and Portugal. He began his career as an analyst at Strata, an M&A consulting boutique based out of Rio de Janeiro. He holds an ExecEd in Private Equity from Harvard Business School, an MBA from IESE Business School and a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from IBMEC.
Prior to joining Capital Dynamics, Mr. Caldas worked in the Investment Solutions team at Partners Group. He previously worked at Atrium Investimentos and has also held positions at UBS, Deutsche Bank and Merrill Lynch. Mr. Caldas graduated with honors from an International Diploma Program in Finance from UC Berkeley and holds a Bachelor’s degree in International Business Administration from Alliant International University in San Diego.
