Cyrus Massoumi: The most helpful thing that an investor can do for an entrepreneur is connecting them to great people, and then taking them to experts and connecting them to early customers and partners.

My aspiration both as an entrepreneur and as an investor is, I really want to be New York’s best recruiter, period. If I could just do that—if I could give one talented employee to every single one of our portfolio companies once a year—I will be the most helpful investor they have, full stop. Founders Fund for example has been a huge supporter of ZocDoc.

One of the things that I very much value in Founder Fund’s approach is their philosophy that the greatest companies will be founder-led. They literally just picked time getting to know who the great founders are, and they back them, no matter what. Often times I felt in building ZocDoc, I had their protection, which enabled me to focus all of my efforts forward as opposed to looking behind my back. I think that’s a huge advantage. So part of what I’m going to be doing with entrepreneurs is following in their footsteps and literally being a very founder-oriented fund.

I think that’s something that was very important for ZocDoc getting to where it got to, and it’s something I want to do as well. Founders Fund in 2010 was not nearly the Founders Fund it is today. I had a term sheet from a much higher, well-known VC fund, one of the top three of all time, at a higher valuation for less dilution, and I went with Founders Fund, primarily because they were on record of being founder-friendly, and that’s me. The real entrepreneurs care more about control than they do about like optimizing economics by, say, 10%.

In fact, when I ask other entrepreneurs, “If you could control the future of your company forever, would you take a 30% reduction in valuation?” most of them say yes. And so, I want to be on record—and I think you can really have that kind of empathy if you have only really been there sometimes—and I want to be on record for founders to know that is the mantle I want to stand on. I want them to know that I’m going to support them no matter what.

MADE POSSIBLE WITH SUPPORT FROM

LAVCA’s gender diversity research is made possible with support from IDB LAB, Member of the IDB Group. Access information about WeXchange, a forum hosted by IDB LAB that connects high growth women entrepreneurs in LatAm with investors and mentors.

Methodology

This list includes 114 senior-level women investment professionals who are deploying capital in early and growth stage tech deals in Latin America, as well as notable women angels investing over USD50k across multiple deals in the region in the past two years. All investors were vetted for inclusion by LAVCA Research.

Every year since 2016, LAVCA solicits nominations of top women investors in tech from the investment community. The inaugural list included 37 investors; the 2017 list added eight new investors. In 2018, complementing the peer nomination process, LAVCA reviewed the investment teams of all active Latin American VC funds, producing a list of 82 senior-level and 47 mid- and junior-level investment professionals. In 2019, those numbers jumped to 88 and 87, respectively, and increased to 103 and 97 during 2020.

NOMINATE AN INVESTOR

This list is not exhaustive; if you know of a junior- or mid-level investment professional working on Latin American tech deals who should be on this list, contact [email protected].
