The European Private Equity and Venture Capital Association (EVCA) has elected Javier Loizaga, CEO and managing partner of Madrid-based Mercapital, as association chairman for the period June 2006 to June 2007.
Loizaga takes over from Sir David Cooksey, chairman of UK-based venture capital firm Advent Venture Partners.
Loizaga has several themes that he will focus on during his term as chairman. He plans to increase awareness and understanding of the industry to stakeholders both inside and outside of Europe. He plans to integrate investors more closely into the EVCA community instead of keeping them as more of a separate entity.
Loizaga also plans to broaden the global reach of EVCA to widen and deepen exposure of European private equity and venture capital around the world, and he plans a continued push for more favourable framework conditions in Europe.
Loizaga commented on his election by stating, 'The industry is not only growing in size, but it is also becoming more diverse. While a large amount of money in 2005 went into mega buy-outs, 78 per cent of investments by number were made in companies employing fewer than 100 people. Mid-market buy-outs activity has also grown.'
'However, there are more features in common than not among these increasingly diverse segments. At the same time, the industry is increasingly becoming global. These factors create exciting opportunities for the Private Equity and Venture Capital community and EVCA is committed to nurturing and growing that community to continue delivering results.'
The election of Helmut Schühsler, managing partner at TVM Capital, as chairman-elect was also confirmed. His appointment as chairman will be voted on at the next Symposium in Rome, 13-15 June 2007.
